What is Bittorrent?

BitTorrent is a tool for distributed download that allows you to obtain your files quickly and easily through links on different sites. It integrates into your web browser and uses bittorent links to download files from different sites that host the links.

How does Bittorrent work?

You start downloading a file and you upload it at the same time to others, this provides a ton of sources for each and every user and gives you an amazing download speed on most of your file downloads.

I get an error message that doesn't let me download!?

The tracker for the file you are trying to download might possibly be down or this might indicate that your connection might not be working properly and not allowing arbitrary outgoing connections.

Can I resume a file on bittorrent?

Of course you can, just make sure you save your download to the same location as the existing partial download. Bittorrent will later resume the file after it identifies it.

Limiting Bandwidth in Bittorrent?

Use the max_upload_rate command line parameter, although make sure you calculate it according to kilobytes per second.

I need some Bittorrent sites!

Hmm, don't ya worry!
You can find all Bittorrent sites righthere (www.bittorrentsites.co.nr)
Some of the favorites you might wish to try are
1. Suprnova (http://www.suprnova.org)

Are there any Bittorrent alternates!?

Well of course! You can always try and get Bittorrent ++ which actually seems like a p2p program but is easy to use and has some settings you might wish to alter/fool around with that you can't change while using bittorrent.
Grab BT++ Here! (http://btplusplus.sourceforge.net/)

You can also try Bittorrent Experimental Client which includes limiting of bandwidth (for surfing and stuff) and a couple features the regular doesn't contain!
Grab Experimental Client here! (http://ei.kefro.st/projects/btclient/)

Another BT alternative would have to be BT New Burst Client, it's very similar to BT Experimental but has an options box.
Grab New Burst Client! (http://krypt.dyndns.org:81/torrent/)

A new Bittorrent client seems to have been introduced. called PTC which shares similar features to that of BT++ and the experimental client. It shows all active torrents in one window, Time left, Max upload rate, Percent completed, d/l speed, u/l speed, # of seeds, # of copies, # of peers, peers done, overall. It also allows you to copy addresse's of torrents to it and download.

Check it out! (http://ptc.sourceforge.net//index.html)

A new addition to the Bittorrent community is Azureus which is a bittorrent client with a nice GUI. Development on this client keeps continuing and new versions are rolling out every so often. Give it a try!

Azureus (http://azureus.sourceforge.net/)

How can I help the community by sharing the files after they finish?

All you really have to do is leave your download window open and others will be able to take advantage of this and will continue downloading the file from you. This is very important as it helps the community spread files faster and it allows others to download files a couple days after it's been actually released.

Miscallenous Additions?

TorrentSpy is a program which you can use in addition to BT that helps you track down BT sources. TorrentSpy gives you information on your Bt files and it will give info such as tracker url, number of files for a torrent file, and how many completes/incompletes the file has.
TorrentSpy (http://torrentspy.sourceforge.net/)

A wealth of information about Bittorrent can be obtained by going here (http://home.quicknet.nl/qn/prive/ro...orrentsites.htm)

Well, I will be adding to this FAQ every now and then when important info comes out that needs to be added so people understand. For now, I'll leave it the way it is..enjoy!
If you feel I have missed something, please tell me so I can add it on!

Say, evil, do want to add torrentspy to the BT faq?

Its a nice lil prog which gives info on the BT files, whether they're dling or not, just as long as the .torrent file is saved to a folder first.

Then open torrentspy, and drag/drop the torrent file in it, and it will give info like tracker url, number of files for a torrent file, and how many completes/incompletes the file has.

I use it since I also use the regular BT client, but the experimental client and the burst client do give these stats, as well as how many leechers or seeders a file has.

I'll find the url for you if your interested in adding it to the faq.

I do know of another lil prog that can be used to make torrents so they can be uled to a tracker and be shared in the BT community.

The burst client can also do this.

I have the installer for this prog, just haven't set it up to try it out yet.

I do intend to try it soon, so I can share some stuff with the BT community.

Don't know if this is really needed in the BT faq, just a lil bit of extra info.

Youre pretty good with graphics and A\V stuff ( I remember your Start Menu and Desktop!)

Perhaps you will consider some basics and links to assist in the Audio Video section? Some simple explanation for the use of codecs, the use of utils to find out whats needed, and the lonks to sites where more sophisticated questions will be answered would be a tremendous help.

Theres plenty of other things tho, so if this doesnt suit you, feel free to go with something else.

thx !

Should an explanation for how to use Torrents in Shareaza be in this thread, or should that wait since it's still in beta?

I dont want to be the word on that, or limiting in scope. I think that mentioning it conceptually, and building on that as it is refined is a good idea.

Krell
May 14th, 2003, 12:55 AM
Dont download anything else at the time

Dont use another P2P app at the time

Dont try to get 10 torrents at a time

Tell your firewall YES, and hopefully, dont be 56k.

Otherwise, sometimes, thats just the way it goes.

Theinfamousone

I haven't had much success with using BitTorrent over Shareaza as of yet. I get the best speeds and reliability just using regular BitTorrent. I like the idea of BitTorrent files just being another file on the "download" section of my P2P app, and have it show all the people I'm uploading too. But so far, Shareaza just isn't practical for it. I wonder if it is because it connects me with more leechers or something, or I just have to share the bandwidth with more people when I use Shareaza. I've only gotten 1 out of 5 or 6 torrents I've tried it with to even start on Shareaza, and that didn't go very fast. So, let's hope it's fixed in the final.

Hehe, right now I'm downloading an entire DVD.

I have the program that can make torrents, it's called completedir-1.0.1 I got off Donkax before it was shut down. Not sure if you can get it anywhere else.

Anyway, if you do get your hands on it, here's the tutuorial from Donkax.

I have been using BT++ all evening now and ..wow..speeds of 190 kb/s and up! Which is way better then Shareaza's BT support in my opinion (I know it's beta!)

But.. I was wondering if there is a search engine for BitTorrent because that would be really nice.

http://www.torrentse.cx/ is a great tracker that is havening some tech prob with such big server loads. Bset tracker there is tho.

http://suprnova.org/ is a great site for movies music and wut not

http://www.bittorrentsites.co.nr/ has links to just about every other tracker site there is.

okay its settled
im in love with bittorrent!!!!

But one question
my matrix is downloading at 30kb/s down (i get 163 max)
and 39kb/s up (i get...39.1max)
would all that upload possibly slow my download and is there a way to limit my upload to possibly 20 kb/s?>

MegaMog
May 14th, 2003, 08:50 PM
u can limit ur bandiwth use with http://ei.kefro.st/projects/btclient/ tho the faster u upload the faster u dl with bit torrent. rember torrents speed up with time as more seed and more people get more of the file.

Krell
May 14th, 2003, 08:51 PM
AS IF you had all that control. It will not matter, you get what you get. It depends on the number of people taxing (or supplying) the sources bandwidth.

Just leave it, some will be faster, some will be slower.

And dont forget to stay online and upload when it says finished !

About uploading. When I let someone use my full 20 kb/s upload my download speeds drop like a rock, so I think so yes.

And I heard there were lot's of complaints about BT++, but it works fine for me. No corrupted files or anything and no crashes.

I have to admit that I am pretty much an emule fan. Sharereactor really rocks and has tons of good stuff. Just click and wait for the files to come in, very convenient. :bk Of topic, ok :mellow

I have just tried burst and the amount of leechers is enormous, Speed has not truly convinced me, yet... We'll see!

Evil_Dweller_01

Emule.. is like shit compared to Bittorrent (in speeds)

I like to get my file within a month.. lol

I also use emule.. but I prefer bittorrent

pacificstate
May 21st, 2003, 01:01 AM
Nice, very nice!!!
I managed to download the last episode of "I cant TELL you what" in less than six hours, which is peanuts compared to Emule.

However I find things a bit 'invisible' in terms of who gets/does what and that gives it a suspicious taste.

The resume and search functions are not as comfortable as with other p2p's but the speed was definitly right on.:tilted

Her is a good list of sites dealing with all things related to Bittorrent:

http://home.quicknet.nl/qn/prive/romeria/bittorrentsites.htm

Also I have downloaded a copy of a BT client called "PTC - Your Personal Torrent Collector". I have the link to the site I downloaded it from however I tried to click on it recently and was unable to connect, for what reason I do not know. Here is the link to that site wether or not It will come back Online I do not know: http://itguysam.no-ip.com/PTC.html

The PTC client shares similiar features to BT++ and the experimental client. It shows all active torrents in one window, Time left, Max upload rate, Percent completed, d/l speed, u/l speed, # of seeds, # of copies, # of peers, peers done, overall. You are also able to copy address's of torrents to it and d/l. There are other features also, but I'm still getting used to it. I like it better than burst for gui reasons, better than the experimental client becase you have all you active torretns in one window, and better than BT++ because you can see the number of seeds and peers that have completed downloading it. Any question feel free to PM me here, in #zeropaid, or on the DC hub.

Hope this helps

P.S. : If my posting of links is not acceptable then whatever mod is in charge of this section please feel free to edit. I'm am confused as to whether or not it's allowed since there are other links already posted here but Matt say that you will be banned. I'm not trying to get ZP in trouble....I'm just trying to help.

slashdot is an enormously popular website that has news for geeks.

the slashdot effect is when they post a link on their site and everyone goes to the link bringing servers to their knees.

WOW slashdot are smart! but how come all of those victims(server owner) claim that due to their hardware error so the server is down for a while.

and those torrent file in it were all gone.

and by sending a large amount of hits to a server will bring down a server? which means the capacity is not large enough?

Could you please add that BitTorrent is a Web Browser plugin, so doesn't have a GUI of its own (until you load the torrent).
Also mention that when it says "Installation Successful", that is what it means, even if you didn't go through an installation wizard. A couple of Newbies and a few of my friends have fallen at these hurdles.
Thanks

Just wanted to know what people thought to the new 3.3 version. I downloaded it, and although it now only needs to check the portion of the file you've downloaded, and shows the amount you've down/uploaded, it seems to never connect to the tracker, and when it does, it kills my connection after 20 minutes, so there is no point in me leaving it on, or share what I've got for very long. I have now gone back to 3.2.1. - what has every1 else experienced? Is it just me????

Gnasher, I never tried the original bittorrent client

I started out with BC++ and later went on to use the shareaza implementation

Hey gnasher1001, I've got to agree with you to some extent. The message popping up with a loud error thud noise is really annoying and means that it stops updating the user on progress until you click OK. The red writting was much nicer. I havn't noticed an increase from the amount of red writing to the error pop-ups. The new one also doesn't say when hash checks have failed.
However I've stuck with the new one as my harddrive took a real beating from fragmentation. Also it helps the swarm.
However torrents have been slower for me since this upgrade. All torrents in my house have - even the person still on 3.2.1. The internet has continued at the same speed and so have downloads from other p2p apps. I don't know if the its coincidence or not. Looking at the speed the number of seeders build up, I think that it must be a problem my end....

I tried out two new (to me) BitTorrent clients today. The first was Flash!, but it was a messy interface and hasn't all been translated into English.
The second was ABC - Yet Another BitTorent Client. Its a fantastic program based on Shad0w. Very user friendly, has torrent spy built in and loads of other information and options. It's all laid out clearly. So far I havn't found any bugs. Outstrips BT++, orginal and Flash!. Worth a mention in the FAQ?

Next stop - Burst! client.

Having installed the Bit Torrent Gui, I have d/l 4 films, but is there a version of Bit Torren that shows who is d/l from who - like emule or edonkey cos I have had a few take down notices and I was wondering if this prog is any safer than others ?

keep posting links to sites

Yet ABC tells you all the IP adresses you are sending to and recieving from. It also tells you everyones prograss and download speeds.
Other clients do the same, but, as stated in my signature, I am fanboying ABC.
As Phalkon says, BitTorrent isn't safe. I have yet to hear news of getting sued, but lots of people have had their internet connections threatened.

Could someone compile all of thise 6 pages into one post so that info is easier to find. Post it here and PM me and ill switch them out.

Questions and etc ideally go into seperate threads and get added in later so that the help thread like this one doesnt get too big to the point that people arent going to read a ton of pages of posts.
