Sometimes WinMx video files that are being downloaded will play on Windows Media Player. Other times I get an error message saying that the file is already in use. Any ideas on this?

Could be that it is the wrong format, or that it is a bogus file.
Check your codec for the video/movie. If it a .mov then of course it won't play in WMP.

If you are trying to play a file that winMX is downloading at the same time you will get that error. try it with WinMX not running and see if you get the same error.

One way to view the file, without stopping WinMX is to copy the incomplete file to somewhere else (out of the download directory). Make sure you COPY the file. Don't move the file out of its directory while downloading or you will fuck your download up.
Also, some .avi files cannot be played with WMP while they are incomplete.
To preview these, i'd use avipreview.
