I prefer Spy Bot myself.

If you are stuck on the decision, then why not use both?

I used to use Ad-Aware but it took forever and wasn't finding things that I knew were there lurking somewhere. So I tried Spybot and it got rid of the stuff quickly and effectively. Made me happy, so that's what I use.

I have used the SpyBot monitoring tool with good success. It's a Real Time Protection like feature.

if you only use one of them, you still have spyware on your machine...i can almost guarantee that.

use both.

Ad aware is better. Use both though, they work well together.

Both..I used to use PestPatrol also..but it gave to many False Positives for Spyware...they actually targeted the word 'Kazaa'....how stupid is that....BMPs included.

I've been using Ad-Aware since it came out but due to my suspicious, bordering on the paranoid nature when it comes to online security, each time I run it, or even the port scanner test that I believe LavaSoft puts out, I wonder -- hmmm my entire computer was just scanned and then I take it further tossing around the thought that maybe it was something the gov snoops created or something sinister like a forerunner for TIA.

I actually crack myself up with my 'suspicions', and I was amazed to see that wilder site admitting they use a web bug! I'm now debating whether to d/l the spyblaster, but first I have a host of personalities to convince that John Poindexter or even worse, the curse of the planet, Hilary , may know what programs I have and how many gigs of mp3's.

I'm removing the tongue from my cheek in case any of you think I'm nuts ;)

I don't know how many times i've said this but...

Both seem to detect stuff the other doesn't.

Why not just use both?

I have SpyBot and Ad-Aware installed on my system. From what I've read, Ad-Aware has a more complex scanning engine while SpyBot simply looks for matches. I guess it's like comparing a virus scanner with heuristic scanner versus one that doesn't. Still, I keep both, because SpyBot finds more nasties than just spyware programs.

Personally, I haven't had any problems with spyware in several months.

janett, did you not have a problem with XP, and Ad Aware? If so has it been corrected?

janett, i was speaking about shortly after you installed xp,and developed a problem. i will have to back and have a look, but i thought it was related to add-aware. My old mind might be failing me.

"A", "B", "both" & "none"

I'd vote both.

I use both as many others have said. I keep
ad-watch enabled at all times and use Spybot for normal manual system checking.

Why not just use both? I believe that Spybot is better, but it doesn't hurt to have both. At least you're being fully protected against spyware. I also use bdkiller16, spywareguard, spywareblaster, and aluria's spyware scanner <--------that helped me to get rid of a lot of backweb lite registry keys.

But anyway, like everyone else said, use both. Enable all the features including ad-watch. Stay up to date and scan regularly.

Ciao.

Well, you dont want too much stuff running in the background of your computer. It can/will eat up lots of memory and sometimes slow down your computer to a crawl. The only non-system background services I keep are zonealarm and admuncher.

I also use both ad-aware and spybot, but simply manually scan periodically.

Using good judgement when dowloading/installing is the best tool you can have though.

Oh believe me......I only install programs I know that will use and benefit me.

I do have a lot of programs, but none run resident in the memory. The only thing I have running in the background at all times is my antivirus, spyware, and firewall protection, ud agent, hare, and freeramxp.

I was watchin The Screensavers on TechTV one day and I seem to remember Cat recommending both. Let me be clear by stating that AdWatch which comes with Ad-Aware Pro and Plus (I think...I have Pro) catches adware(etc...) before it gets to your computer. Ad-Aware cleans the crap up that has already made it to your computer. Spybot does both in one program. If you click on the Spybot-S&D button, then click the Immunize button you can install the Bad Download Blocker and immunize your computer. Both seem to miss files when run by themselves. But together they do a wonderful job. :mellow

Just FYI, Spysweeper recently received a 1/5 stars in the April 22nd, 2003 magazine issue of PC Mag. Now this isn't certainly the definitive guide, but it has its weight. From what I've heard, Spysweeper is outdated and it is known to cite a problem regarding a false sense of security. It's unstable and doesn't catch some of the common spyware apps of today.....Just a heads up really........If you notice that it's working effectively for you, be my guest and keep using it.

I've started to become suspicious of Webroot's spyware category all together. After I run Ad-Aware and Spybot and have been seemingly spyware free for months with real-time scanning, it cites the same spyware on my PC. This is well after removing internet cache and cookies.

For me, Ad-Aware 6, bdkiller 16, and Spybot work well to remove and monitor spyware. Aluria's spyware scanner is a gem when it comes to finding any remaining registry keys which are spyware related. Spywareblaster and Spywareguard provide real time scanning protection.

On top of that, I use Proxomitron, Window Washer 4.8 (build 2), and MRU Blaster.

Peace

i have both installed.
but ever since i have used spybot, both have detected nothing.
u just have to keep spybot updated and immunize, immunize, immunize and it's all good.
it's an excellent feature.
but i always run adaware just to be sure.

Blocklist (http://www.spywareguide.com/blockfile.php) It does look interesting. I already Have Spybot S&D, and AdAware. Too many progs of this type may create conflicts. But in any event, be careful. You don't want this to happen!Don't rip us off or I will feed your organs to "Misty, the killer canine", in alphabetical order. LMAO!!!!:fire

I agree, too many spyware programs could possibly conflict; However, this is not a program. From what I understand, it's only a registry entry that's supposed to block certain known activeX apps. I do recommend backing up ur reg before trying it. I have not tried it and probably will not. I simply thought it would be of interest to someone.

Compatibility issues? Nates, not with my config........

I like to use a diverse set of tools to make sure spyware does not get on my system, and if it does, remove all traces of it.

I agree that using too many tools can bring up conflict issues. Believe it or not, I had even more spyware removal/blockers than what I have now. After testing many apps, I finally came up with an effective config that I feel protects me the best from spyware. If you have a decent amount of RAM (decent meaning 256 MB or above), you shouldn't have many problems testing out apps.

IMHO, it all starts with the security settings in the browser you're using. You define what to allow and what to block. Use a good hosts file and possibly restrict some sites. And just be smart......READ the privacy policy....many times you can opt out of spyware....and many times the apps will work fine with the spyware removed.

Anyway, just to show how badly apps can miss spyware and why it's good to use a good set of spyware tools, I will make the following example. Even with the real-time scanning of SpywareGuard and SpywareBlaser, backweb lite was able to slip under the hood when I was installing some Logitech software. I ran spybot and ad-aware with the latest definitions and sure enough it removed about 50 registry keys, a folder, and an executable file. Most people would now be satisfied at this point......but not me.....not from past experience.

I start an indispensable tool, Aluria's Spyware Scanner. This is my final line of defense. I wasn't entirely convinced that I needed this app until it removed a lot of reg keys that both spybot and ad-aware missed. That in itself makes this tool well worth it....And I haven't had any conflict issues to date. I also use Registry Crawler after Spybot and Ad-Aware. I just searched for "backweb" and it came up with approximately 40 registry keys, which I looked over, and deleted. But even after this......there's still more spyware yet to be removed! *drum roll please*

Aluria's Spyware Scanner is like the clean up crew.....the fine tuner, which has a strict algorithm that throughouly searches the registry. It utilizes a great set of definitions.

Attached is a pic of what Aluria found.....Keep in mind that this is after Spybot AND Ad-Aware were run. Pictures speak for themselves....you can see how much was missed by these two apps......which would have been otherwise lurking and transmitting personal information, surfing habits, and who knows what the hell else. If I hadn't used Aluria, all this would have still been on my system, wreaking havoc.

Only after I use this set of tools, do I feel reasonably spyware-free. So if you think you are safe from spyware by simply using Spyware Blaster/Guard and the tandem of Spybot and Ad-Aware, think again.......It's like using a half-assed virus scanner, whose definitions are years out of date. Believe me when I was first using this set of tools, I thought I was overdoing it too.....overkill anyone? But after seeing the results, I honestly believe that it is more of a must-have. And to think, by just running spybot and ad-aware, I would still be having a buncha Backweb Lite crap running around on my system.(*shudders*)....A priceless tool if I must say myself....So umm ya, that is the set of spyware tools that I use for full protection. I cannot stress this enough........just my 2.023 cents.

Peace..... :)

EDIT: I posted the pic in mid-scan......it probably already gathered most or all the keys however. It scans the trouble spots first and then just scans the whole system for full protection.....It takes about 20-30 min to scan your whole system, depending on what you're doing at the time...... 140 confirmed spyware reg keys.....WOW!

BTW, decent blocklist......dunno if I will use it yet....but good find nonetheless.
