My computer crash this morning for no apparent reason, well it would not boot and I was forced to re-install Windows. I installed windows on the same partition but renamed the WINDOWS to WINDOWS2 in an attempt to keep my programs and files. It appears that my Program Files folder is intact but I cannot access my old michael folder in Document and Settings, which contains tons of stuff. It keep saying access denied. My question is there any way to get into the folder?
Any help would be great!

Did you, by any chance, have any password-protection on that folder?
And what version of Windows are you using?

well, documents and settings...hmm you must have xp or 2000
log in as administrator, and change the permissions so that you can access it, or do what you wish with the files as administrator.
if that doesn't work (i'm not sure it will) then i'm sure that there are tools out there to forcefully change file permissions.

No I did not have the folder password protected, though my login was. another folder from a login that was not password protected seems fine.
p.s nasrules you still interested in being a mod at my forum, what do you wanna be added to? I have pmed u but you hav not replied

Changing ntfs permissions:
http://www.microsoft.com/WINDOWS2000/en/server/iis/htm/core/iidfpsc.htm
if you have xp home, you'll need to go into safe mode to access the security tab.

do what cpu said...
but other than that, i can't suggest much... i mean, i know how to log in as root in osx and such. but this, well, its windows. and windows is very complicated. tooooo complicated.
btw, if you're login was protected, then so is the folder...

Ok, I was up at 7 this morning and I managed to get into Document and Settings by the method cpugenius describe - yah!! - only one problem, now I have same problem with all the folders within it, including My Documents which is the one I really want to get into. Any ideas how I know get pas the permissions on these folders within Documents and Settings?
Thanks for help, please keep it coming

Ok, there are different permission groups and I have been trying to give full control to them all but I cannot do this for a group called CREATOR. Anybody know why this is and is there a way of doing it, as I think this may be the problem. Could I just delete that permission group, it does give me the option to do so.

No, I wasn't sure if I should. Do you think I should?

as long as you have one group in the permissions, then you will be fine.
for instance, i have a folder on my harddrive that i share over my network...
it has one group, "everyone" and they have "full access"

Creator Group was added when you tried to re-install windows, so it will be ok to delete.
Hell, you probably have a bunch of install logs taking up a lot of hd space. When you tend to install xp over xp, you end up with a lot of install garbage.
