You couldn't install XP....I believe it's a 128mb min. on ram....
The HD is WAY to small...XP sucked up around 3gb's on a fresh install...with only 1 system restore backup....
CPU is fine....
I'd suggest going with 2k making sure you have or can get 2k drivers for all the Vaio's odd hardware....once your sure of that you can step forward and install 2k. That or upgrade the ram....256 if you can manage and maybe pick up an external HD (Firewire/USB) for storing your files....or a CDRW/DVDRW drive via USB or firewire and just keep burning 4.7 gb discs as you go....if you have a CDRW built in...then by all means go for the HD. Then install XP. :D
Edit: XP specs...you can use 64 megs....but I'm sure it would be slower then frozen shit dripping off a dogs ass...lol
Here's What You Need to Use Windows XP Professional
* PC with 300 megahertz or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233 MHz minimum required (single or dual processor system);* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, or AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended
* 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)
* 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available hard disk space*
* Super VGA (800 × 600) or higher-resolution video adapter and monitor
* CD-ROM or DVD drive
* Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device

if you are going to install XP, it's almost a waste of time not to have at least 128 MB of ram!! if you're not going to upgrade your memory, I wouldn't recommend installing XP.

If I were you, I'd run 2000 on that Vaio. It simply won't be comfortable with XP.

what would happen if i just tried to install in from the file without having it burned on a cd

you can't do it. to install windows, you will probably want to reformat. in reformatting, you lose your cd image. even if you don't reformat, you will need to access the image while windows is not loaded, can't do it without being burned on disk.
paradox.

it wouldn't work, even with the image mounted as a virtual drive...you would need to access data while windows is not booted, and the virtual drive is not mounted.
