Peer to peer can be used for many unquestionably good purposes. Ordinary computer users can now donate their left over computer resources to huge research p2p networks. Some examples of projects currently going on is cancer research, electronics research, aircraft research and experiments in artificial intelligence. Some of the projects that are being planned are distributed space research, climate research, quantum physics research and distributed self-learning AI spam filter systems and much more.

Peer to peer processing was already known before the time of p2p file sharing. But p2p file sharing was and still is the killer application that spurred a tremendous amount of research into p2p algorithms and technology. These research efforts are now beginning to result in far better p2p technology, which will benefit all those good p2p uses. So thanks to file sharing cancer research will be better! So p2p are going to be really good for the human race.

Also, p2p will be able to decrease the need for the huge server farms currently used on the Internet and costs lots of resources and energy. So p2p will be good for the environment too!

If the cost of better cancer research, HIV research, quantum physics research and so on is that some record companies will loose some (or a lot) of profits I say: Let them loose their money. Cancer research is far more important!

Cancer research is far more important then what exactly?

This is no new idea, between ads and selling CPU power, P2P could be a massive source of money.

The reason no one has done it is because most programs are created by the guys that aren't in it for the money, and Kazaa developers are just too lazy.

Maybe they'll do it someday.

If Kazaa could use extra CPU power from those people that leave it open all day, they could pay for the RIAA to get off their back.

If they do it would have more arguments for P2P and not just think of P2P for piracy as some ppl think.

Research in medicine etc is very important and if P2P kicks in then.......well it speaks for itself

Two of my flatmates use programs to help cancer research. Instead of a screensaver, the program loads. It comes up as a small window that moves round the screen, telling the user what information is coming in and going out. Its meaningless, but looks good.
Anyway, back to my point - this software for Cancer research is very different to kazaa+co. It can only be used for cancer research. I cant see that the day will come that kazaa users will be able to say, "yes, i'm sharing files, but it is for the good of us all"

yea, seti@home is the first prog that i remember, that used people's comp power to do work... i mean, hell, what are you doing with idle cpu time? wasting electricity?

if kazaa's developer's (sharman) even knew how kazaa worked, they might be able to implement it. but hell, the biggest change i have seen is the participation level, which sucks like hell anyway... it was cracked within days of it's release...
