Yea, I know what you mean. Getting rid of the Me was one best things I did.

Edit: Haven't gone XP myself since win 2k is doing a pretty good job for now.

lol... i never had many problems with windows me. the worst probelm i ever had was when zonealarm messed up one of my files and made it so my computer would not shut down...

it would sit on the last screen before auto power down and just look stupid.

but winme never crashed for me (before or after the zonealarm incident). like, once a month. xp crashes way more for me :-\

XP was on the computer that i recently bought. I never used ME, so i don't know about the crashing problems you mentioned, but i do agree with you that XP "rules!!!"

Yep, I used ME for about 2 weeks, hated it like none other, switched to XP, it's ran like a dream. Hopefully Longhorn will be an equal improvement.

It depends of more than the os, as you found out with zonealarm.

Shoddily written programs, bad drivers etc all contribute to make an unstable pc.

2k/xp seem to be more stable than the 9x/me variations though.

Man, you're lucky! I had Windows Me for about 15 months (don't ask how I managed!) and in that time I had to format and clean install FOUR TIMES and I got a BSOD literally 4-6 times a day.

On the other hand, since I installed XP nearly 10 months ago, I've seen TWO BSODs, had no reason to format and haven't had it freeze at all other than mentioned above. It's simply a dream OS after the crappiness of Me!

I seems like a conspiracy to me. Windows 98 crashed alot as it was but ME was pure crap. I think MS did this on purpose to make the upcomming XP look even better. Kind of like the oil companies raising gas prices from 1.29 per Gal. to 2.17. Everyone says what the hell 2.17. So the oil companies back off the prices 1.79 per Gal. and everyone feels good for not having to pay 2.17 anymore. Forgetting that three months ago we were paying only 1.29 anyways.

Does that make sense or am I rambling again?:mellow

Man you pay $1.79 a gallon?? We pay nearly £4 a gallon, that's about $5.75!!!

I've used ME with no problems. I admit I didn't upgrade as such from 98E, I just did a clean install, but there was no apparent problems.

I suppose the upgrade thing from 98, which ME was intended for, was a bad idea, as from people's testimonials caused no end of problems. But like I said, a clean install was fine for me.

Upgrade from 95 to ME was even cleaner....had little to no problems and a bit of tweaking made it stay solid.

As you may have noticed in the past...I defended ME many times....

ME is good... 95 is classic... 3.1 was a drag... 2k kicks ass.... XP is fairly good...bit to flashy for my taste a times...

LOL! CCS have you ever noticed that you seem to be the only one who defends Me? The majority of users have had nothing but problems with Me, and I don't know anyone outside the techie-community that doesn't prefer XP. In fact I think you're the only one I've ever heard of who does...........................

1) The users who bitched about ME had/have dick for brains....if it doesn't work fix it...or stop bitching and use another OS. The people who bad mouth an OS just cuz they donno how to set it up right are the people who would never enjoy Linux....but oh well.

2) I prefer 2k over XP because of it's homey feel...and the fact that it's not flashy and bloated like XP is, however, XP has current drivers and is a breeze to use at times...so it's decent.

: P

Edit: I sure as hell ain't gonna use Longhorn....lol DRM can go give itself head for all I care...my PC is just that...MINE...they can spy on someone else. Heh...if I had too I'd go back to 95 just to make sure no DMR crap was on my PC....

I'm not suggesting XP is better than 2000. I didn't mention 2000!

Thanks, so I have dick for brains, huh? I stopped bitching and used another OS as soon as I could. I bad-mouth it because it was the most unstable, crappiest piece of junk I have ever used! Not everyone is able to take risks with tweaking.

lol... i probably managed to last for so long with me, because everytime i added new hardware, it (windows) wouldn't get it working 50% of the time, so i had to reformat. luckily, i only had to do that 3x.

first of all, yes...i am a wierdo.

and this is because i did like ME, it was actually pretty stable! i did have to format and reinstall occasionally, but that was no biggie..i had it done in an hour or two with all applications/settings in place.

but when i got into xp/2000, i was hooked...i would never go back.

i haven't yet reformatted this computer.

i'm a wierdo too then. lol. i loved m.e. i had everything set up PERFECTLY. lol. i could do things faster on my p3 1ghz than a guy with an amd 3200 right now... just ergonomics, like shortcuts, etc...

lol... i think i would like 2000 more than xp... but i have xp now :-\

i dunno, i just think that 95% of the 'features', are just bloat. i have progs to do what i want, and i like those progs. until microsoft goes the way of apple and produces quality apps for their os, then i will always use winamp over wmp, cuteftp pro over network neighborhood, etc.

I'm actually using ME now, and with a few tweaks, it works fine. I'm stuck at it though, because of my hardware specs. I wouldn't mind an upgrade, but if I had to stay with ME, I will. The only time I get BSOD's is when I have had the pc on for a few days, when I run out of ram. Thanks to CCS and the program he sent me (cacheman I believe), it hasn't done that in quite a while.

LOL hardly! I had NOTHING but problems with it .. and for a while it was the only thing I could get. I do thank ME for one thing, getting me into Linux.. which was my only escape from ME for a while.

When I made the switch to 2k, I never looked back. 2k is absolutely the best Windows OS available imo.

I agree with you all that XP rules. Fortunately we don't have to pay for any of our OS's and going to get Longhorn for free probably two or three copies!:D and I have had XP since it just came out. Also for free:D

Personally, I rather be whiner with an OS that doesn't crash all the time than tweaking and fighting an uphill battle with Me every week or so.

CSS, It';s not a matter of not being able tweak Me but not having to it all the time. I rather have OS that is easy deal than one that takes a lot work just keep it from crashing. It just makes life a lot more easier.

Once you get it running nice all you gotta do is defrag every once an awhile....and ya'll do that with all Window's based OS's.

XP gave me nothin' but shit at first to...after a bit of cleaning it runs fairly nice...same for 2k (much less work though).

And as Moony said....the switch over does make a big difference....thing is he was using a Compaq OEM copy of ME...not an upgrade or a full version. Which means...hell...lol

NP Hova... : ) I had that running on this P1 w/ MMX 133mhz system...32 megs of ram on win 98 and it's been running for months now.... it's a work PC...don't do much but it doesn't crash either. Even able to get CoolEdit Pro to run on it.

Most likely, if "XP" is crashing alot on a computer itbecause of something that on the computer that making it crash. Another problem, is when a person installs the "SP1" update this has been know to make XP very unstable, plus "rumored" to have Microsoft's spyware in it to.

If a aperson were to do a format of there hard drive and install XP right, there should be any problems, plus you can find out what programs work and don't work with XP.

That All Folks....For Now

2k all the way...

xp only seems to run fast if you have 1000mhz cpu or higher.

just my opinion...

I used ME for a few weeks and hated it, but that was a Gateway OEM version, if I did a clean install with nothing but the OS, and did all the inevitablely necessary tweaks, I imagine it'd be nice, but I can't imagine it being much stabler than the NT kernel.

Anyone know the minimum specs rec. for XP Home/Pro?

I only have a 450mhz laptop and 64MB Memory and 4 Gig space and mine runs like molasses.

If I were you there'd be no doubt in my mind about using 2000 instead. I went from XP Pro to 2000 recently on my other 400mhz 'puter. Before, it was sluggish. Now, it's fine.

Yeah the system requirements on their site make no sense. If you want to run XP normally, you need at least 128mb (preferably 256mb!). With 128mb you need a 1000mhz processor at least. And with 256/512mb it would run fine on a 500mhz.
