How much does it cost the RIAA to prosecute one copyright case? Say if it's a real easy case, the lawyer might get what, a grand? Two, three grand ? (lawyers are greedy) Say $2,000.00 per case. Lately the number of Kazaa users online is around four and a half million. That adds up to NINE BILLION DOLLARS to prosecute just the fasttrack users. Throw in Gnutella and everyone else and you can see that they are pissing in the wind! Not to mention the backlog of court cases, it would be years until they all funneled through and alot of us would be already dead!! Also the first ones to be prosecuted would have paid their dues and would be back out file sharing again, before they even put a dent in illegal file sharing, getting caught again, thus adding to a never ending cycle, bogging down the courts to a standstill.
That is why they are going after the ISPs. They want the ISPs to be the babysitters of their copyrights, at no cost to the RIAA and at a great cost to the ISPs.
This is totally NOT what the USA is all about. We as Americans demand private communications, unmonitored by corporate america.

All it takes is for Congress to pass some stupid law, and anyone that is caught sharing files is immediatley fined, just like a parking ticket. Those parking tickets would go straight to the RIAA's "stop file sharing at all costs" budget. Say each fine is for $200, they catch 1000 people a day (from what I hear, they are already catching probably tens of thousands of people per day) and they will make, $200,000 a day, then they are making 6 million a month. But of course once people are scared out of sharing, they will start leeching by the millions, effectively rendering P2P a joke.

Oh yeah, let's not forget that Sony, one of the 5 major record labels is worth hundreds of billions, and they make hundreds of billions probably a year off their CD burners, and media, and CD players and on and on, which is all directly benefiting from P2P. They make FARRRRRRRR more money now that P2P is in business, I've seen the figures before on their album selling profits to CD burners profits, I don't think they are going anywhere any time soon.

Instead of wasting that money, they could use it to lower the cd prices so that people don't have to download. Or they could use it to set up some kind of GOOD legal internet mp3 downloading service. There are a few of those allready, but you can't download what you want on it, just from a couple of artists. And on antother site you have to pay again to download from another artists.. ->stupid.

For me, this proves how stupid the music industry is.

Oh btw, in Belgium they raised the taxes on blanco cd's today..
Pisses me off!
Lucilly I bought another 70 cd's yesterday at lower price...:devil

Tax blank CDs? Where does the taxes go to? They need to to do that here, then the country would get money and they'd tell the RIAA to go screw themselves because Congress would know how much blank CDs help.

Dunno where the money goes...
I guess the government. I'm in Belgium, so it's very unlikely that
the RIA of AMERICA is gonna get some of it.
I think our government has made an agreement with the record companies to tax cd's, and therefore 'stopping' the copying of music. But I think the government will keep the money.
I guess it will contribute to Belgiums superb social security system and health care.

JIPIE!

Too bad they gotta tax blanc cd's though

while lower cd prices will help sales somewhat, what they need to do is develop a REAL on-line service which would include new items as well as a vast archive of older material and at high quality bitrates, cuz nobodies gonna pay for 96kbps cbr mp3's thats just stupid

imagine if the 5 million kazaa users were to use said service at $10 - $15 on a monthly flat rate that should be enough to keep them satisfied for awhile but thats a big IF.

note* i know some of you will say " i pay $30 - $40 - $50 for my internet service theres no F@#!% way im spendin more cash for this"

thats not the point, the fact of the matter is, is that the riaa has been taking steps backwards instead of forwards with thier unwillingness to conform to new technological advancements
" a journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step "
as long as they start to head in the right direction something positive should come about eventually.
just my thoughts

* i hate the riaa as much as the rest of you*

(if anybody feels the need go ahead and flame me, dont really care as those were my thoughts and opinions for which im entitled to have)

To the original topic, if they sue people for billions like they did with those students, that means if they win you will be paying all your income the rest of your life to them. I think suing is much better business than selling CDs would ever be. :)

IMO, sueing the college students was a bad move on the RIAA's part. They had to do it sometime, but I think they'll find that no jury is willing to sentence perfectly good college students to utter indenturement for the rest of their miserable lives just for downloading eminem.

I don't believe that money itself is the prime motivation for the RIAA to conduct these lawsuits.
If musicians are able to market themselves over the Internet on a wide enough scale without the help of record companies and labels, then the industry as we know it will collapse like a house of cards.
Music is already on it's way to take on a different form of being controlled directly by the artists, which is their biggest fear.
They will spend every dime they have now to prevent that from happening.
If copying is such a big issue, then why isn't FOX 5 busting down my door for a taping a Simpson's episode?

very good point, they are very very conservative.
And thats not good for anyone except themselves. It's not good for the artists either. The artists could make a lot more money form their records by selling em directly to consumers.

Those record labels are parasites and leeches who get money for doing absolutely nothing. They're just a link in the chain from artist to consumer that can be easily removed and that only makes records cost more.
